What types of water skiing are included in the club?

The Shakopee Prior Lake Water Ski Association offers several different opportunities to ski with us:

- Show Team: The show team puts on about 10 ski shows during the summer (Thursday evenings). This includes pyramids, barefooting, ski jumping, ballet, and much more
- Junior Development: Young skiers receive weekly lessons from an experienced coach to learn some or all of the "3-event" disciplines (slalom, jump, and trick).
- Learn-to-ski: We host several learn-to-ski events for new skiers. No experience expected.
- Reserved timeslots: Members practice their skills during a reserved timeslot that recurs weekly.

Do I need to know how to water ski to join the team?

While it's helpful if you already know how to ski, it's not necessary. We do host several Learn-To-Ski clinics throughout the summer, and we have a lot of experienced skiers on the team who can help. Younger participants, especially girls, can do many acts in the show (doubles, conventionals, pyramids) without actually skiing.

Show Team

Can I be involved in the show team if I don't water ski?

Yes! We have so many off water opportunities for parents & anyone of any age who wants to be involved in a family-friendly production! Some of the non-skiing options include announcing, acting, sound, dock, boat driving, spotting, costumes, etc. It's like live theater on the water, and we need a lot of personnel behind the scenes too!

Show Team

What are the expectations for attendance at practices?

While we expect attendance at every practice, we understand that families have lots of commitments during the summer. Our Show Directors will determine if any significant absense will affect your ability to ski in the next show.

Show Team

Do I need to bring my own skis?

Generally, no. The club provides base skis for climbing acts and ballet acts. We also provide around the boat skis, and have a few trick skis available and jump skis. People need their own specialty skis such as swivel, shoe, wakeboard etc.

Show Team

What clothing and gear should I have for the show team?

Each person needs to have some type of flotation. The guys typically wear sleeveless Barefoot Internation barefoot suits and the ladies typically wear a Flow Mo show jacket. Wet suits are recommended for early/late season skiing. The club has some helmets for jumpers. The club typically gets discounts from Barefoot International, so please use the Contact page to inquire about any promotions that are available.

Show Team

How does the show team communicate information to members? (i.e. bad weather, general messages)

Our primary method of communication is TeamSnap. All active members should install this app and should contact a Show Director to be added to our group. General club notifications are sent out via email.

What is the show team schedule?

The show team skis on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings (Thursday night are the show nights). Practices are 6:00-dark (and open ski from 5:00-6:00). Shows are at 7:00 on Thursdays. The ski season runs from early May through August, but skiing continues through Oct 1st.

Show Team

Are all ski shows at the home site or do you travel?

All shows and practices are at Quarry Lake in Shakopee except for the regional tournament and occassional travel shows.

Show Team

Does the show team compete?

Yes! We compete in the annual Midwest Show Team tournament.

Show Team

If my kids are skiing in the show team, do I need to be present during all practices and shows?

Yes. Due to the risks of this sport, we do require that a parent be present during all events. And since you need to be present, that are many ways that parents can also help out and participate including helping to wrap ropes, help with sound system, be a spotter in the boat, repair equipment, become a boat driver, help with the safety boat, or learn to ski and be on the water with your kid! As an exception, you can identify a responsible adult to fill in for you on occassion, but please inform the Show Director of this in advance.

Show Team

Are there requirements for putting in volunteer hours?

Our club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. And in order to keep our membership rates as low as possible, we require all members to help out wherever they can. This includes spring/fall cleanup days, helping put in and take out docks and jumps, watering newly planted trees, equipment maintenance, costume repair, equipement repair, general clean-up, weed whipping, and many other activities that need to be done to have a great site and a great team.

Membership, Show Team
